Scientific advances in the creation of restorative biomaterials, in-vitro cell culture technology, tissue grafting, tissue engineering, molecular biology, and the human genome project provide the basis for the introduction of new technologies into dentistry. Recently, there has been a great interest in periodontal regeneration techniques in maintaining the physiologic structure of tissues. Most scientists and clinicians believed that damaged or diseased human tissue could only be replaced by donor transplants or with totally artificial parts. Periodontal regeneration promises a more advanced approach in which organs or tissues can be repaired, replaced or regenerated for more targeted solutions. Available methods of periodontal regeneration are unable to achieve ideal regeneration. This review briefly discusses gene therapy, platelet rich plasma and stem cell based tissue engineering, which may have promising results in achieving complete regeneration.
