It is with deep sense of grief, the IAPHD and the editorial board informs the sad demise of Professor Dr Chaitanya Reddy, General Secretary, SGR Institutions, Bengaluru, life member of our Association. May almighty take the departed soul to his heavenly abode and give strength to his family and loved ones to tide over these days of sorrow.

Center: Dr. D.Y Patil Dental College and Hospital, Pimpri, Pune



The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dr. D.Y Patil Vidyapeeth, Dental College, Pune has joined hands with Impact India Foundation, an International initiative promoted by UNDP, UNICEF and WHO in association with Government of India who is providing on-the-spot diagnostic, medical and advanced surgical treatment for preventive and curative interventions for adults and children from rural settings. It is an outreach program for inaccessible rural areas where medical services are not available. A team under the guidance of Dr. Anmol Mathur, Reader, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dr. D.Y Patil Vidyapeeth consisting of Postgraduate students and Interns conducted the camps at Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh during 8-14 September 2017 and Ballarpur, Maharashtra during 11-18 December 2017, respectively. The Mirzapur camp benefitted 962 patients who got screened for oral diseases and received medications. A total of 513 patients received treatment such as restorations, extractions and scaling during this seven day camp. Heavy consumption of tobacco habit was observed among the population hence special emphasis on health education towards ill effects of tobacco was given to the population visiting the train. Another camp at Ballarpur, Maharashtra witnessed 1,222 patients with various oral health problems. 356 people received treatment such as scaling and restorations. Special emphasis was given towards the children referred under Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram for minor surgeries. School diagnostic camp was organized for schools in Ballarpur for screening oral diseases and distribution of brush and tooth paste among the school children. The initiative of Impact India Foundation is worth appreciating.

  World Oral Health Day (20-3-2018) Top


“Say Ahh- Think Mouth, Think Health”

Center: NIMS Dental College, Jaipur, Rajasthan



NIMS Dental College & Hospital, Jaipur celebrated World Oral Health Day on 20th March' 18,. The theme for this year is “Say Ahh- Think mouth, Think health”. Various oral health programmes were organized by Department of Public Health Dentistry under this event, A health interview and a talk show by Dr. Mridula Trehan, Principal, NIMS Dental College & Hospital & Dr. Roma Yadav, Sr. Lecturer was telecast by News India Channel. Oral health check-up camp and awareness program was conducted for the school children of NIMS International School. Proper tooth brushing technique was demonstrated by enthusiastic postgraduate, interns & undergraduate students to all the school children. Drawing competition was organized for the school children and prizes were distributed to the winners of the competition and also to those with good oral hygiene. In addition to this, free dental check & treatment was provided to all the patients reporting to NIMS Dental College and Hospital.

  World Water Day 2018 Top


Center: Manav Rachna Dental College, Faridabad, Haryana



Students of Manav Rachna Dental College observed this day through a unique activity: 'Scribble for Water'. Thoughts on water as a resource and its importance as well as conservation were solicited from the students of Manav Rachna Dental College. The best thoughts were selected from each year and posted on the notice board of department of Public Health Dentistry. All the years of undergraduate course participated in the activity, organized by department of Public Health Dentistry on 24-03-18. A total of 328 scribble- cards were filled by the students out of which 25 best thoughts were selected. Most of the participants wrote regarding importance of water and how to do water conservation in day today busy life. Some has also discussed regarding newer and innovative methods of cleaning water.

  World Oral Health Day Rally 2018 Top

World Oral Health Day is observed annually on 20 March and dedicated to raising global awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of oral hygiene so that governments, health associations and the general public can work together to achieve healthier mouths and happier lives. World Oral Health Day was launched on 2013 by FDI World Dental Federation and these campaigns have featured a specific theme. The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka organised a rally on the occasion of 'World Oral Health Day-2018' in Bangalore from Hudson memorial church circle to Puttanna Chetty Town Hall on the 20th of March 2018 at 10.30am. Staff and students from the following colleges participated: Government Dental College and Research Institute, Bangalore, Vokkaligara Sangha Dental College & Hospital, Bangalore, Faculty of Dental Sciences, M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bangalore Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital and KLE Society's Institute of Dental Sciences actively participated in the rally. The rally was followed by a formal program chaired by Dr Pramila Deputy Director for Oral Health Policy and Dental Health, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Asha CEO, NHM, Dr RajkumarAlle, President KSDC, Dr Gopikrishna President Elect IAPHD, Dr Ranganath Secretary, IDA Karnataka Branch. Dr L. Nagesh gave an enlightening talk on the 'Importance of oral health on general health'. The programme was attended by more than 300 members.

  Rural Oral Health: Dentists' Perspective (Panel Discussion) Top




A panel discussion was presented by a cohort of 5 Public Health Dentist on 27th April, 2018 at the 18th World Rural Health Conference held at New Delhi. The theme of the conference was 'Healing the Heart of Healthcare: Leaving No One Behind' bringing focus on challenges of rural health system development. Rural habitat poses a severe disadvantage to rural population in terms of access to healthcare services. Only a comprehensive approach can address these inequities arising from poor healthcare systems. This panel presented views from the dentist perspective regarding the existing situation, ground realities, experiences and integration plans with the medical health personnel to implement self -sustainable programs for the community through their participation. Dr Pradnya Kakodkar was the moderator of the panel discussion.

The following topics were covered in the discussion :

  1. Existing situation of oral health problems in the rural sector: Dr Snehal Patil, Assistant Professor, School of Dental Sciences, KIMSDU, Karad.
  2. Integrating oral health in the rural health landscape: Dr. Pradnya Kakodkar, Professor, Dr D Y Patil Dental College and Hospital, Pimpri, Pune.
  3. Roadblocks while providing oral care in the rural sector: Dr. Aswini Balappanavar, Assistant Professor, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi.
  4. Experiences of working in the rural set up: Dr. P G Naveen Kumar, Professor & HOD, Banarus Hindu University
  5. Involvement of dental colleges for providing dental care: Dr Shweta Habbu, Reader, Dr HSRSM Dental College and Hospital, Hingoli.



  Tii Training Programme Top

Dentists have a focal role to play in Tobacco Intervention Initiative (TII). Though, the number of dentists offering this life-saving therapy is miniscule as compared to the large number of people who consume tobacco. Many dentists are reluctant to take on tobacco intervention as they doubt the efficacy of the treatment, while others don't have time or training. The Tobacco Intervention Initiative by IDA Mumbai is a professionally-led “call to action” programme to eradicate tobacco addiction while striving for a 'tobacco free India' and thus improving the oral health of Indians by the year 2020. Training the dental professionals is critical, and should impart the knowledge and skills required for intervention, update on emerging approaches to tobacco cessation. TII training programme was conducted by The Department of Public Health, Educare Institute of Dental Sciences, Chattiparamba, Malappuram, Kerala on 21st April 2018 in association with the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry, Kerala Chapter and IDA Malappuram branch aimed at training dental professions to help patients quit tobacco. Dental faculty and professionals from various parts of South India were trained about tobacco cessation. The speakers from TII Mumbai, updated the trainees about the recent advances in the pharmacological management of tobacco users. The attendees were trained regarding the role of non nicotine medicines, nicotine replacement products in the form of Gums, Nasal spray, Patch, Gums Inhaler in helping the users to get rid of tobacco habit. A group activity/ Role playing on counseling and intervention techniques were also a part of the training.

  World Oral Health Day 2018 Top


Center: Manav Rachna Dental College, Faridabad, Haryana



Department of Public Health Dentistry, Manav Rachna Dental College, Faridabad celebrated World Oral Health Day “Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health” on 20th March 2018. The day was marked with both on-campus and off- campus events. Off- Campus events included “Paint-a-smile” drawing competition for children at three schools followed by “Oral health education sessions”. Along with this, on-campus events like “Photo-Booth and selfie with smile” were also conducted. A get together was organized for all the staff members and PG's to celebrate the day. The Best drawings and selfies winners were awarded at MRDC by the Mrs. Satya Bhalla, Chief patron, Manav Rachna Institutions.

  Awareness Session on Women's Health and Hygiene Top

On 7th March 2018, Department of Public Health dentistry, Manav Rachna Dental College, Faridabad celebrated International Women's Day by organizing a talk for women's personal hygiene and health in the premises by eminent speakers from a hospital in Faridabad. The speakers educated the female students and staff for one hour regarding the symptoms and signs of bacterial and fungal infections which may occur in females due to lack of maintenance of personal hygiene. A total of 153 participants from various institutes benefitted from the session. The students came from diverse streams including law, dental, nutrition, physiotherapy, engineering and management.
