Assessment Forms Integral Component of Educational System on Whom the Institution, the University, and the Society Trusts.

I write this message for our readers as a conscientious teacher and on behalf of the association who have always been at the forefront in adopting to change. We had to face the consequences of the second wave of the pandemic even before we could heave a sigh of relief with the first. The pandemic has had great impacts on all realms of life, including the educational system.

Dental education is predominantly a skill-based profession built on sound knowledge of medical and dental courses. Dental education has faced challenge in meeting the required hours of training in clinical skills due to the lockdowns and restrictions on patient care during the pandemic. I applaud the enthusiastic and dedicated teachers who were early adopters and rose up to train students in clinical skills through demonstrations and videos.

Now we have to adopt to the changing needs and situations and revisit our assessment system. We will have to conduct compensatory training sessions and assessment to ensure required competency is met. It will have to focus on the quality of learning rather than quantity, probably with a reduced emphasis on quota completion. The challenge now is the clinical assessment without having patients. Normally what is assessed in a clinical assessment is the ability of the student to elicit history, clinical decision-making, physical/clinical examination, planning treatment, communication, and last but not the least is the professional and ethical behavior. How can we ensure certification of competency in the current situation?

I thought of giving some insights on certain concepts and areas that are essential for our readers that might help review their plan of action for the present and the future. Health professional education literature reports that assessment methods should be valid, reliable, objective, and close to authenticity.

Most of the time we were asked to limit the examination to case-based assessment. What can a teacher do in such a situation? Within this limitation there are ways and means to develop an assessment plan to fulfill the above-mentioned criteria. One such assessment method is developing objective structured clinical examination, for which the teachers need to be aware of the nuances of blueprinting, developing stations, training and use of standardized patients, training and calibrating assessors. OSCE assesses a student's learning at “shows how” level. The ideal and doable assessment strategy would be at “shows level” by a real-time assessment in the workplace (workplace-based assessment strategies).

The list might appear Greek and Latin to a few, but dear friends when we agree to take the role of teachers it is indeed our responsibility also to ensure the students are trained well, assessed and declare to the world that they are fit for practice. Assessment drives learning and assessment certifies learning.

My sincere request would be to gear up and undergo the required training in medical education or consult an expert who has experience in these areas of education. Globally, there have been leaps and bounds of improvement in health professional education. India has given a call for action with the revised National Education Policy.

Now is a good time for all of us to prioritize and strengthen our skills to be “teachers” and catch up with skill upgradation in tune with the changing times. The readers can also contact me for more details and directions in this regard.
