“If you working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed, the vision pulls you”

~Steve Jobs

Today, the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry (IAPHD) with its unstinting efforts has positioned itself as the voice of the dental public health in the country from policy development down to the grassroots, serving the community.

Dr. Sowmya, our very competent editor, approached me for a message in my new role as the President of the Association, as the baton changed hands from our ever-respected and vibrant Past President, Dr. K. Pushanjali.

As I take up the responsibility of the President of this young and effervescent Association, I would like to instantly congratulate the Organizing and Scientific Committees on the outstanding success of the 25th National IAPHD Conference which was held on held on a virtual mode. This was only possible by the meticulous planning, judicious implementation, and teamwork of many members and leadership. I congratulate the dynamic Secretary and all Office bearers and revered seniors who contributed immensely in the proceedings as well as the conduct of the Association during these testing pandemic times.

As I take up the reins as the President of the Association, I know we are all trying to find strength in this time of uncertainty and recurrent vulnerability as a community. Our lives shift in response to the current pandemic and impending concerns; I am certain that the Association shall prevail, explore, strengthen, and expand.

During my tenure, I envisage activities to take shape and make them an effective reality. The excellent work done by the Commission constituted by the Association regarding the development of Competency-Based Dental Education should be implemented through a strategic approach. This standardized teaching and evaluation method should be implemented in a time-bound and scientific manner across the country, keeping the Dental Council of India regulations in mind.

Further, our specialty across the country has been instrumental in the development and implementation of tobacco cessation centers in dental colleges, which remains one of the largest single successful strategies in tobacco cessation in our country. Now, the time has come to move and advance our focus holistically to upgrade them into Dental Wellness Clinics. These Wellness Clinics in Dental Colleges would spotlight not only tobacco cessation but also draw attention to lifestyle-related diseases promoting holistic health.

The Association in collaboration with other partners organized the mega-event and set the Guinness World Record for “most people brushing teeth simultaneously” at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. We intend to carry out one such flagship program annually of social and health value. These activities not only mobilize health behavior change but also inspire us to be a driver of bigger change.

I am sure all of you would agree with me when I say that our Association has positioned itself very well across the spectrum of oral health in the country. It does speak a lot of the true potential of our workforce and future scope of expansion. We, as an Association, are resilient, passionate, and nimble. Hence, I call upon each one to join us in this endeavor; together, we can not only change but can also revolutionize oral health of the nation. My sincere gratitude to each life member of IAPHD, to all senior teachers, to founder members, and last but not the least to Dr. R. K. Bali Sir, Dr. Hiremath Sir, and Dr. Aswathnarayan Sir.

It has been rightly said that “Vision without action is merely a dream, action without a vision just passes the time, and vision with action changes the world.
