N2 - Objective: To assess the prosthetic status and treatment needs of institutionalised elders in Chennai. Materials and methods: A cross - sectional study was conducted among 289 residents of old age homes in Chennai. Demographic information was collected followed by clinical examination of Prosthetic status and treatment needs using a section of WHO oral health assessment form (1997). Results: 88.2% of the subjects had no prosthesis in the maxillary arch, 90.3% subjects had no prosthesis in the mandibular arch, there was a significant difference between the prosthetic status and gender in maxillary arch (p = 0.04) while there is no significant difference between prosthetic status and gender in mandibular arch (p = 0.2). The need for full prosthesis was highest and it increased with age, followed by multi -unit prosthesis (23.9%) in maxillary arch and need for a combination of one and / or multi - unit prosthesis in mandibular arch (28.7%), there was very highly significant difference between prosthetic needs and gender in both maxillary and mandibular arch (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The findings of the study demonstrated a high unmet prosthetic treatment needs among the institutionalized elderly population surveyed.
